Clive Kitten with PRAA

January 31, 2011 Leave a comment

Clive is a 4 month old rescued kitten, and he has a condition that is rare in cats called Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA). It is a congenital vascular abnormality, and is most often found in dogs but has also been found in other mammals…llama, horses, cows, wild cats…and humans.

Clive is the foster kitty of one of my human’s good friends. Check out Clive’s blog…

Clive Kitten’s Surgery

Clive and his 2 brothers were rescued after their mom cat was killed by a car. Clive’s 2 brothers have already been adopted…together! If Clive has this surgery he has the chance to live a long life and be happy like his brothers!

If you can make a contribution to help Clive that would be very pawsome! Even if you can’t make a contribution of  money you can “follow” his blog and “like” him on facebook, and “tweet” him on twitter and that would be pawsome too! Oh, and leave a comment for Clive and his mom, with your good wishes and pawsitive purrs!

Many purrs and meows!

Patch, lost by Delta Airlines at Cairo International on Dec. 18, 2010

January 8, 2011 Leave a comment

Read about Patch, a kitty who was lost by Delta Airlines in the Cairo International Airport in Egypt on December, 18, 2010. Delta is doing nothing to find him. Demand that Delta search for Patch until he is found and safe.

Find Patch

Patch, lost by Delta Airlines in Cairo

Poor Patch is lost and scared, and  his mom is frantic. We are sending pawsitive purrs and prayers to Patch and his mom, and we demand that Delta gets off their incompetent ass and finds Patch immediately.

We will never fly Delta again…

Gi’ Me Cat Shelter from the Cold

September 19, 2010 Leave a comment

This is an old post from last year that I’ve asked my human to repost for the approaching winter season. It’s good to get started early so you don’t have to panic at the last minute like my human did last year. You can skip down to the helpful & informative links below…

This was from 2009 – Well, winter is setting in and the human is thinking about building a cat shelter for Kitty, the stray, semi feral black cat she had neutered a few months ago. My favorite human is a good ol’ crazy cat lady, but as you can see she is not very creative with stray cat names…Kitty, Bow Tie, Tiger, Little Cat, and of course our Little Kitty who was abandoned by neighbors about 5 years ago. She must have had a brainstorm when she named me Violet…

It’s going to be 29° tonight…my favorite human is a little late with the bright ideas, but it’s never too late to give a cat some shelter. Here are some shelter ideas to help the kitties make it through the winter, be they stray, feral or your own outside cats (some of these web sites have the same ideas, but you get the picture):

DIY Shelters

An inexpensive, yet effective shelter from PACT Humane Society in Chicago, Illinois

Plans for building a cat shelter from Ally Cat Allies

Several more shelter ideas from Ally Cat Allies

Excellent shelter ideas from Neighborhood Cats in New York, New York

Some excellent advice for feeding & sheltering feral cats from the Feral Cat Caretakers Coalition in Los Angeles, California (yes, it can get cold even in California)

Shelter idea and some good info from Coolest Cat Care

 Premade Shelters

Heated Outdoor Cat Shelter – this shelter has radiant floor heating and requires an electrical supply. It’s very nic and also has a backdoor for quick exits.

The Feral Villa a simple, pre made, wooden cat shelter at an affordable price

Shelters from Cats Play (wooden cat {and dog} houses, rather pricey but very groovy)

Heating & Warmth

Be sure to raise all shelters and feeding station off the ground with bricks or pieces of a 4×4, and put a nice thick layer of straw in the shelter to keep kitty off of any moisture that might accumulate inside. Don’t forget the mylar blankets (also known as Space Blankets!) which are a really cheap way to hold in the heat (line the inside of the shelter with them). You can get them from Amazon.com or at Walmart in the camping section).

Another thing to consider for keep kitties warm is a Snuggle Safe heating disk which provides heat for about 10 hours (microwave required to heat the disk!). If you use a Snuggle Safe be sure to wrap it with a blanket or towel before putting it in the cat shelter. Lowest prices for Snuggle Safe as of 11/06/2011 (these come with a cover. If you know of lower, please let me know!):

Purr Pads – also known as Mysterious Purr Pads, are supposed to retain the cat’s own body heat. We just got a couple of them so I can’t tell you how effective they are yet, but you get 2 in a package and they are cheap.  They are 20 x20 and made of polyester fibers which are supposed to also be recycleable. You can get them at any number of cat supply stores, but the owest prices online for Purr Pads that I’ve found as of 11/06/11 are:

There is also the Mysterious Kuddle Kup which comes in 2 sizes and is made out of the same stuff as the Purr Pad.

Woe is me. Yesterday, before I had any breakfast…and I was hungry… my (formerly) favorite human put my collar on me so I thought I was going for a walk with my harness and leash, but then she shoved me into one of those plastic box things (with my fleece blanket thankfully, although it didn’t help much), loaded me into that scary car, and drove for hours and hours while I squeaked and meowed in fright. Then she took me into this room with other cats and ladies…and left me. “Don’t worry, you’ll be alright” she says…yeah, right.

I was scared and just sat watching something called Marco the Maine Coon. Apparently he is the biggest cat around, but he is actually a nice kitty and very beautiful. There was also Chip, another really big cat and very handsome. They sat quietly watching me in my plastic box. I was scared, but curious, too. Chip and Marco live at this place, and sometimes Chip donates blood to other cats who need it. Their human is called Veterinarian. Funny name for a human, but she’s OK, and she doesn’t let those dogs come in this place so that makes her even more OK.

Then, a lady whisked me away into another room and put me in a cage. Later they took me into another room and started poking me and then I was really scared. I just wanted to run and hide. Next thing I knew I woke up inside a nice warm fleece sleeping bag inside a warm cage, and my mouth hurt and I was a little woozy. What happened??? I wanted to go home.

A few hours later my (not so) favorite human finally showed up to take me home. I was so happy to see her that I clung to her (uncharacteristically) when she took me out of that plastic box. Then I heard someone say that they had taken 6 of my teeth out. I’m only 5 years old, but I had something called Feline Tooth Resorption. My human paid a lot of money for this, and it’s because she loves me, even though it didn’t seem like it at the time. Those teeth were causing me a great deal of pain, and we didn’t even realize it until Veterinarian said it could change my personality, but I had become a different cat in the last few months, a little on the grouchy side…but hey, my mouth always hurt so what do you expect.

Now my human is shoving a bunch of nasty tasting things into my mouth twice a day so I don’t get infections and so I don’t feel the pain. I’ll be glad when this is all over, and I hope it never happens again.

My human says something about brushing my teeth, but I don’t think so! I’m not sure what that means, but I do not like the sound of that at all.

For the record, Violet’s veterinarian is the most excellent and highly recommended cat doctor, Dr. Nan Moses of 4 Season’s Cat Hospital in Charlotte!

Sad Day

Bow Tie KittyLast night my favorite human had to bury one of our homeless kitties that she’s been taking care of since before I was born. It was Bow Tie Kitty. Poor Bow Tie was hit by a car. Fortunately our neighbor Michelle found him right after it happened and so they were able to get him out of the street right away. We believe he died right away and didn’t suffer much, if at all.

My human has been taking care of Bow Tie Kitty for about 5 years, but he never let her get close enough to pet him. Bow Tie was very timid. She dewormed him, gave him flea treatments and antibiotics when he was injured or sick, all in his food. She fattened him up before winter, and he always got all the steak fat and trimmings. Bow Tie was probably the best fed homeless cat around because he ate the same grain free foods that we eat, plus steak and chicken.

She was never able to get him neutered because he would not go in the trap after the first time when she had to let him go because she needed to trap a female kitty before she got pregnant. She only had one appointment and needed to use it for the female kitty, so she had to let Bow Tie go and he never forgot that trap.bow tie kitty

He used to come to our front porch to eat, but he hung out across the street so when my human saw him almost get hit one time she began taking the food across the street for him. After that we did not see him on this side of the street; after he ate he would always walk back behind the house across the street where my human fed him.

She always worried about Bow Tie if she didn’t see him for several days. The longest he was MIA was about 2 weeks, then just as she started thinking he’d met his demise, he’d appear on the old lady’s porch waiting for his dinner.

Unfortunately there are a lot of homeless, unsocialized kitties in our neighborhood. When they show up in our yard, my human traps them (if she can) and gets them fixed. Also unfortunate is we live on a well traveled road and it’s not a safe place at all for cats outside.

Our Tiger Kitty, who brought 4 kittens to us before my human had her spayed, used to come to our porch to eat with Bow Tie. She was also hit by a car a few years ago.

We also had Tuxie, who showed up one winter. He was probably about 6 months old then. My human was getting ready to trap/neuter him, but then he suddenly disappeared one day and we never saw him again, not in the road, not anywhere and she used to call him every night because until then he’d never missed a meal. We think big, mean Kyle chased him off. Poor Tuxie.

Right now we are taking care of Kitty, an all black cat that started coming around earlier this year. We trapped him and he was neutered a few months ago. We don’t have his photo because he became even more elusive after he was trapped/neutered. Kitty gets his food way at the back of our property and hangs out in the woods back there, so hopefully he’ll never feel the need to cross any streets.

There is a new tabby cat across the street that she is going to trap and have altered. We don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl, because the kitty runs away before she gets very close and won’t go to the food until she’s back on this side of the street.

It’s just very scary because we live between 2 very busy roads, and my human constantly worries about all the homeless kitties around here. People drive very fast, and they do not slow down for animals crossing the road even if they have enough time to do so. In fact, we’ve seen people speed up to try to purposly run over the animals. It’s a very sad statement about some human beings.

My human misses Bow Tie Kitty and she keeps looking out of the window to see if he’s waiting for his dinner, that maybe it was a mistake and it wasn’t him that she buried after all.
